The Route 58 storefront where a Carvel ice cream store is planned. RiverheadLOCAL/Peter Blasl

A Carvel ice cream shop is coming to Riverhead.

The shop is planned for a storefront at 635 Old Country Road in Riverhead, one of three stores in a freestanding building in Riverhead Plaza, the shopping center east of Ostrander Avenue.

A sign permit application was before the Riverhead Architectural Review Board Wednesday afternoon. The board OK’d two wall signs and a directory sign.

The storefront to be occupied by the Carvel shop was previously occupied by a travel agency.

The Carvel website says the store is “coming soon,” but no opening date is provided. A Carvel press office spokesperson could not immediately be reached for comment.

Carvel franchises have operated in Riverhead twice before, according to Mark Kwasna, proprietor of Dari-Land on Main Road in Riverhead. Carvel occupied the West Main Street site where Snowflake Ice Cream is located. A Carvel franchise was later opened in what was then the Harrow’s Shopping Center, on the Route 58 circle, opposite the 7-Eleven.

There’s no shortage of frozen dessert offerings in Riverhead. In addition to Dari-Land and Snowflake, Riverhead has a Ben and Jerry’s ice cream shop, which recently opened on East Main Street, Mexicandy, a specialty ice cream and candy store and Victoria’s Helado on East Main Street.  The Dunkin’ shop on Route 58 —in the shopping plaza where a Carvel store operated in the 1960s and ‘70s — has a Baskin-Robbins counter inside.
