The Southampton Town Police Department is taking applications for its 2026 Civilian Police Academy, an educational program designed to give residents a closer look at how the department operates and to strengthen communication and trust between police and the community.
Police said the 16-week program begins Jan. 15, 2026, and meets one night per week starting at 6 p.m. Sessions are held at police headquarters, 110 Old Riverhead Road in Hampton Bays. According to the department’s brochure, classes are held on Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m. and conclude with a graduation ceremony.
The academy includes instruction on topics such as laws of arrest, search and seizure, use of force, DWI and narcotics enforcement, domestic violence, investigations and gangs, police said. Participants may also have the option of a ride-along with a patrol officer and attending demonstrations at the department’s firearms range and emergency vehicle operations course.
Police emphasized there is no physical component to the program. Seats are limited, with Southampton Town residents given priority, though non-residents may be considered if space is available. The brochure lists a minimum age of 21.
To apply, contact Lt. William Kiernan at wkiernan@southamptontownny.gov or 631-702-2232. Police said a short application will be provided by email or mail upon request, and applications can also be accessed through the department’s website.
