Six local pantries were “filled to capacity” following the delivery of food collected during the Wading River Fire Department’s Christmas  “Stuff-A-Bus” campaign, the department said in a press release.

Wading River Fire Department members on Sunday delivered all the food collected during the food drive.  The deliveries went to St. John the Baptist Church, Wading River Congregational Church, North Shore United Methodist Church, Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, St. Anselm’s Episcopal Church and Living Waters Full Gospel Church in Riverhead, according to the release. More than 20 members, some with their children offering to volunteer, drove with the school bus from church to church, unloading the bus.

First Assistant Chief Denise Gluck thanked the community for filling the bus, even with the consistent snowy weather and the high cost of food.

“Despite hardships, the residents really responded and made it all work,” Gluck said.

“Thanks to everyone’s generosity, the pantries are all filled to the brim, after the holiday season,” WRFD President Mike Hammer said.

The fire department thanked everyone who brought donations to the bus, which was decorated and parked in the fire department’s parking lot for six weeks, as well as everyone who made anonymous monetary donations to the food drive. It offered special thanks to First Student Bus for donating the school bus for stuffing.
