The Riverhead Senior Center will be open today until 4 p.m. as a warming center due to extreme cold weather and wind chills expected to drop as low as 5 to 10 degrees below zero, town officials said.
The center is located at 60 Shade Tree Lane, Riverhead.
Officials urged residents to stay indoors overnight if possible and to dress in layers when outside, including a hat and gloves, and to ensure all exposed skin is protected. Frostbite can occur in a short period of time, officials said.
Anyone in need of immediate shelter is asked to contact the Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500. In an emergency, dial 911.
Officials also reminded residents not to forget pets and to bring them indoors or ensure they have adequate shelter.
