Marie Anna Madigan of Riverhead died Feb. 2, 2026, at Kanas Center for Hospice Care. She was 78 years old.
She was born Dec. 7, 1947, in Southampton to Harold J. and Geraldine T. (McDonnell) Schafer, and attended Riverhead High School. She was married to Robert W. Madigan. She was a member of Riverhead Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary from 1981 to 2026, Women of the Moose from 1980 to 2010, and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Her family said her greatest joy in life was being a grandmother, and she poured her whole heart into her grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert in 2017; her granddaughter, Paige Lennon; and her great-grandson, Bradley Jones.
She is survived by her daughters, Annmarie (John) Lennon of Flanders, and Penelope Hensley of South Carolina; her sons, Edward Wegley of Riverhead and Thomas Wegley of Middle Island; her daughter, Kaylee Schafer, of South Carolina; her sister, Kathleen Schaefer of Selden; and her brother, Kevin Schaefer of South Carolina. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors Wednesday, Feb. 4, from 5 to 8 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. Cremation will be private. Memorial donations may be made to East End Hospice — Kanas Center for Hospice Care.
