Riverhead Town Police recorded 113 criminal offenses in January, down from 164 in January 2025, according to the department’s monthly activity report presented to the Town Board yesterday by Riverhead Police Chief Ed Frost.

The criminal offense data reported by the Riverhead Police Department complies with the National Incident-Based Reporting System implemented by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and used by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services. The department completed its transition to NIBRS reporting in July 2024.
Shoplifting incidents declined sharply year over year, with 22 incidents in January 2026 compared with 52 in January 2025. Driving under the influence offenses also fell, from 14 in January 2025 to 10 this January. Simple assault rose year over year, from 15 incidents in January 2025 to 21 in January 2026.
Riverhead Police reported filing 76 criminal charges in January. The most common charge categories shown in the report’s arrest-by-charge chart were criminal possession of a controlled substance (8), criminal trespass (8), petit larceny (8), warrants (7), bench warrants (5) and DWI (5).
Riverhead Police arrested 65 people on those charges and held 33 individuals for arraignment, according to the report.
Police reported 42 domestic incidents in January, down from 56 in January 2025.
The town issued 1,079 summonses in January, up from 1,042 a year earlier.
There were 2,712 non-criminal incidents reported by Riverhead Police in January, down from 2,830 in January 2025.
Police reported 152 motor vehicle accidents in January, compared with 139 in January 2025. Eighteen accidents involved deer, double the nine reported in January 2025.
