The Riverhead Water District will begin its annual spring flushing of water mains on the evening of Sunday, April 12, with the work continuing for three weeks through April 25.
Most of the flushing will be done at night to minimize inconvenience to consumers, according to a public service notice issued by water district Superintendent Frank Mancini.
Customers in the district are advised to check their water before doing laundry during the flushing period, since the work may cause temporary discoloration. If the water appears discolored, residents should let it run for several minutes. If it does not clear, they should wait a while and try again later.
The annual flushing is a routine maintenance measure to clear sediment that can accumulate in water mains over time.
Customers with questions may call the Riverhead Water District at 631-727-3205 or 631-727-3200 during normal business hours, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. After hours and in emergencies, residents should call Riverhead Police at 631-727-4500.
