Dedicated Scouts, soldiers and community members were undeterred by soggy weather Saturday and turned out to place flags at more than 230,000 gravesites at Calverton National Cemetery, in advance of the Memorial Day holiday Monday.
The flag placement is an annual event at the cemetery, one of the busiest and largest national cemeteries in the United States.
“Almost 5,000 enthusiastic, patriotic volunteers turned out for Calverton National Cemetery’s gravesite flag placement event on Saturday, May 23, including Veterans Service Organizations, numerous Scout units, organizations and families. It was a glorious day,” the cemetery said in a social media post thanking volunteers for their efforts.
Gravesite flags will remain in place until May 30, 2026.
