The Riverhead Highway Department invited kids of all ages to its Osborn Avenue headquarters Saturdays for a truck show designed for children, with a display of big trucks and heavy equipment, a giant sand pile for playing on and free refreshments.

Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski, who conceived the truck show, first staged in 2024, said he was “very happy” with the size of the turnout over the course of the two-hour event. He estimated the number of visitors at about 500.

Zaleski thanked Lolly’s Hut for providing hot dogs, Snowflake for ice cream cups and Council Member Ken Rothwell for the donation of a rented portable lavatory. He said he personally covered other expenses.

He also thanked highway department staff members and his friends for volunteering to help at the event, noting that no taxpayer funds were spent.

“I’m proud to be our highway superintendent keeping our roads safe and I always try to give back when I’m able,” Zaleski said.

“It’s funny, I had over $2 million in equipment out there for show but the biggest thrill is the giant pile of sand the kids love playing in,” Zaleski said.
