We are sorry to share the news of the passing of Douglas C. Van Slyke on September 11, 2026.

Doug was born in Riverhead N.Y., the eldest of five children of Gloria and Charles C. Van Slyke. His Dad was a respected teacher and basketball coach at Riverhead High School and his Mom was a teacher and homemaker. Doug was a longtime resident of the East End of Long Island and had a successful career in mortgage banking, helping others obtain their dream home. Through Doug’s life, he filled it with love, kindness, and a great enthusiasm for the outdoors. Skiing, sailing, volleyball, gardening, cooking for friends and family, great conversations around the firepit, his circle always expanded and included so many wonderful people, who now share our loss.

Doug will be mourned by his partner in life Sandy Walsh, who will always keep him deep in her heart. Doug’s son Brenden Van Slyke and wife Jen will miss him dearly and treasure his memory. Doug’s family, his Mom and Dad, his brothers David, James, Greg and his wife Rose, sister Laura Mayo and husband Jim, and their families all will miss him enormously. Sandy’s MA family, brother John Sasur and wife Heather, sister Linda Viens and partner Reggie, departed sister Sylvia and husband John Pyzocha and all Sandy’s nieces and nephews will miss his spirit and wisdom and smiles.

Doug so enjoyed his quiet walks at Indian Island, the Quogue Wildlife Refuge, the ocean, as he contemplated an understanding of this world we all live in, the beauty and the hardness both. Doug’s love of nature and the outdoors was his guiding strength, his discovery of joy — the meaning of life. So please, take that walk, adjust those sails, enjoy that sunset, take that run, and think of Doug.
