Friar’s Head

The Town Board is considering legislation to allow the building of on-site vacation rentals, known as “golf cottages,” on two golf courses in Riverhead Town.

Two graduating seniors at Riverhead High School, who work as golf caddies at Friar’s Head, have earned full housing and tuition scholarships for college from the Evans Scholars Foundation.

Calling the town's valuation of the 350-acre golf club "improper" and based on "wishful thinking" of its potential for residential development, a State Supreme Court judge ordered the assessed valuation of the Friar’s Head Golf Club in Baiting Hollow reduced by more than 60 percent.

The story behind the wrecks on the beach just west of Reeves Park are the most-asked question fielded by the Riverhead Town historian's office, said town historian Georgette Case.
