Riverhead’s Halloween Fest, including its popular costume parade, will take place on Saturday, Oct. 25 from 4 to 10 p.m. (Rain date Sunday, Oct. 26.)

Riverhead's Halloween Festival drew hundreds of people downtown Saturday for spooky family fun, starting with the crowd-pleasing coffin races, continuing with trick-or-treating along Main Street and culminating in an after-dark costume parade and performances.

“Unfortunately, it would be impossible to socially distance all participants and stay within outdoor event crowd limitations and COVID-19 regulations,” the Riverhead Business Improvement District said in a press release.

Hundreds flocked downtown for the Sunday night spectacle, an after-dark procession of elaborate floats, dancing zombies, monsters, ghosts and creepy characters.

The forecast heavy rains and winds Saturday led the Riverhead Business Improvement District Management Association to announce changes to the Halloween Festival events.

The Halloween costume parade will feature cash prizes for first, second and third place winners and the weekend events for the first time will include coffin races.
