Island Water Park, the water sports and recreation park under development in Calverton that's been touted by town officials, was written up by the fire marshal for illegal occupancy and fireworks last month. The owner says he can use the site for his own private parties.

Island Water Park, a new sports and recreation facility on Middle Country Road in Calverton, did not open for Memorial Day weekend as the developer had planned. He now hopes to have the park open by mid-July.

Island Water Park gained final approval of its amended site plan at Tuesday’s town board meeting. The park owner said in an interview today he expects to open by Memorial Day.

Island Water Park, a proposed "extreme water sports park" on a 46-acre site in Calverton adjacent to Riverhead’s Veterans Memorial Park, gained approval from the Riverhead Industrial Development Agency yesterday of its application for financial assistance, including a 10-year property tax abatement, and mortgage recording and sales tax exemptions.

The town board will schedule a public hearing on the site plan for a new recreational facility in Calverton that's been two decades in the making.
