Rental apartments

The owner at the home of the time of the fire that killed five family members trapped in a third-floor apartment has pleaded guilty to renting three apartments in the Second Street home without permits and assessed penalties totaling $1,500.

Community members gathered on East Second Street last night for a vigil in memory of the five members of the Rivera family, who perished in a house fire one year ago.

The Riverhead Town Board amended the town's rental dwellings code last week to require all third-floor rental units have increased safety measures, including a second means of egress, sprinklers and interconnected smoke detectors.

The developer has scrapped plans for the former Sears building due to historic preservation rules and signed a contract to buy former Dinosaur Walk Museum, where it will seek to build 90 workforce housing rentals above ground-floor retail.
