At Wednesday night's meeting, the town board authorized bow-hunting for deer on certain town-owned properties Oct. 5 - Dec. 6, added four more Baiting Hollow roads to the town's list of "189 roads," authorized an ad for a junior civil engineer, and backed out of a deal to sell the historic East Lawn building.

Facing Riverhead officials' insistence that the former Blockbuster Video site on Route 58 is inappropriate for a medical marijuana dispensary, Columbia Care officials agreed to explore alternatives.

Riverhead Town Board members say the financial administrator, WIlliam Rothaar, did not disclose his past connection to the new CPA's disgraced and disbanded firm, Miller, Lilly and Pearce, which was involved in the scandal at the Roslyn school district, where Rothaar was district treasurer.

The owner of the dilapidated and long-vacant restaurant site on the corner of Griffing and Railroad avenues has until Sept. 12 to remedy conditions deemed unsafe by the Riverhead fire marshal, according to Riverhead deputy town attorney Dan McCormick.

The Rt. 58 former Blockbuster Video site, not far from Riverhead High School, may not be appropriate, board members say. The town wants to revisit its master plan in light of the new state law.

Beverly Schmidt of Jamesport was honored by the Riverhead Town Board yesterday for her 11-year effort to keep Tuthills Lane litter-free. The board approved the hiring of a longtime friend of the supervisor to the position of his executive assistant at a $75,000 annual salary. It also approved a $13,000 insurance policy rider to protect the town from claims arising from computer hacking.
