Riverhead Catholics to celebrate first Salvadoran saint with procession and Mass Sunday at St. John the Evangelist
The Salvadoran-American community is celebrating the canonization of St. Oscar Anulfo Romero, an archbishop martyred in 1980. Romero was saying Mass a cancer hospital when he was shot and killed. He had been a spiritual leader who worked for social justice and peace in the war-torn country.

St. John’s in Riverhead hard at work ‘preserving tomorrow’
The 150-year-old Roman Catholic parish is undertaking a fundraising campaign to repair and improve its aging buildings and facilities, as well as to pay down its diocesan debt. The parish already has pledges totaling more than $700,000 on its $750,000 goal, but has set a 'dream goal' of $1.1 million.
