Riverhead police officers will take part in the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee’s “No Empty Chair” campaign during the week of April 20, with enforcement and education efforts focused on teen driving safety.

Officials today discussed possible safety enhancements, such as a four-way stop, at the intersection where an elderly man was killed in a wreck yesterday afternoon.

Drivers illegally pass stopped school buses more often than you think, according to Riverhead Police Chief David Hegermiller. He said cameras installed on school buses caught about 250 vehicles in the past month disobeying the law. When a warning period expires May 1, violations will cary a minimum $250 penalty.

From June 14 to June 20, law enforcement agencies will be issuing warnings and distributing educational materials to drivers and pedestrians. That will be followed by a week of enforcement with ticketing, from June 21 to June 27.
