If you’re planning to put away your outdoor furniture and get your yard ready today for the effects of Hurricane Earl — which will impact our local weather tomorrow evening — be careful: An air quality health advisory has been issued for our area by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
High levels of the pollutant ground level ozone are expected today.
Summer heat can lead to the formation of ground-level ozone — a major component of smog, according to the state DEC.
“People, especially young children, those who exercise outdoors, those involved in vigorous outdoor work and those who have respiratory disease (such as asthma) should consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity when ozone levels are the highest (generally afternoon to early evening). When outdoor levels of ozone are elevated, going indoors will usually reduce your exposure. Individuals experiencing symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain or coughing should consider consulting their doctor,” according to the DEC website.
The air quality health advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. till 11 p.m. today.
