Southampton Town Police have released details about the motorcycle crash on Route 105 in Riverside Thursday night.

Police said Robert M. Rogers, 48, of Westhampton was driving drunk and involved in a race against another motorcycle “at a high rate of speed” southbound on Route 105, between Flanders Road and Route 104, when he lost control of his 2001 Harley Davidson, entered the grass median and crashed. Both Rogers and his passenger, Melody Clifford, 39, also of Westhampton, were thrown from the bike and injured.

Police said Clifford was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Rogers, who was placed under arrest for driving while intoxicated, was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where it was discovered he was more seriously injured than originally believed. He was then taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center for more extensive medical treatment, according to police.

As a result of their investigation, police said, Rogers was charged with felony driving while intoxicated, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle first degree, also a felony, and reckless driving, engaging in an unlawful speed contest, and assault third degree, all misdemeanors.

The motorcycle, which was demolished, was impounded to police headquarters, according to the police report.
