Thomas J. Backel of Baiting Hollow died July 20, 2012 at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. He was 60 years old.
He was born Feb. 23, 1952 to Stanley and Helen Backel in Mineola, NY. He was the former owner of Long Island Motor Service in Mineola. His hobbies included fishing and hunting. He loved to spend his time outdoors.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, his children, Steven, Edward and Angela, his parents, his brothers, Michael, Robert and Richard, and his sisters, Marion Cisterino and Susan Migliaccio.
The family will receive visitors Monday and Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the McLaughlin-Heppner Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Tuesday at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m., officiated by Father Robert Kuznik. Private cremation will follow.
