Riverhead Little League Softball participated in a Hurricane Sandy Relief tournament on Saturday. The 10 and under and 12 and under divisions competed in the event, which raised $900 to be donated to Long Island Cares, Inc. for Hurricane Sandy victims. Additionally, two trailers, a pick up truck and a minivan full of donations will go to St. Andrew’s God Loves Mastic project and to the Catholic Outreach program in Oceanside.

The 12 and under group went undefeated and placed first in their division. Coached by Steve McKay, Mark Stromski, and Steve and Michelle O’Kula, they took home the championship title. The 10 and under group, coached by Ed Wicklund and Scott Carey, placed second in the division with two wins and two losses. The tournament was hosted by Eastport South Manor.

“We were really honored to have been a part of something so great. Our girls not only had a great time, but they really felt like they were helping out our neighbors in need, and they certainly did,” said coach Steve McKay. Donated items included blankets, winter coats, food and other needed supplies.
