A blown power transformer in the vicinity of Oliver Street and Northville Turnpike knocked out power to the BJ’s/Kmart and Wal-Mart shopping centers on Route 58. The traffic signal at the intersection of Route 58 and Northville Turnpike is also out. Police are on the scene directing traffic.

The transformer blew and caught fire at about 8 a.m.

LIPA crews are working to repair the damage. A LIPA crew foreman on the scene said power should be restored to the retail stores by about 10 a.m.
