The Harvest Moon this week as seen from Polish Town, rising in the sky behind the Tin Man water tower on Pulaski Street.
The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox, which this year occurs on Sunday, Sept. 22.
No one knows who named the autumn full moon “Harvest Moon” but its brightness no doubt helped farmers harvest their crops.
The name was popularized by the 1903 song “Shine On Harvest Moon,” by Nora Bayes and Jack Norworth, about a young lover’s wish for one more romantic moonlit interlude with his gal before winter sets in.
