Two armed robberies were reported moments — and miles — apart in Riverhead late last night.
The Valero gas station on Route 25A in Wading River was robbed by two masked men just before 10 p.m., Riverhead Police said in a press release. One had a handgun and one had a knife, according to the police report. They entered the Valero Food Mart and demanded money from the store clerk, a 66-year-old male, and were given the cash contents of the register, police said. They also stole numerous packs of cigarettes and the victim’s cell phone before fleeing the store.
At about the same time, a group of juveniles walking on Hinda Boulevard in the area of Industrial Boulevard were approached by a dark-colored minivan. A man with a handgun got out of the minivan and demanded that they empty their pockets, Riverhead Police reported in a press release. The youths ran away, but one of them fell and the assailant was able to catch up with him, police said. He removed a cell phone from the victim and fled the area in the minivan. Police were called at 10:03 p.m.
Police searched the areas of both robberies with no results, according to the reports. The investigation is ongoing and anyone who may have information is asked to contact Riverhead Police detectives at 631-727-4500.
