The New York State Department of Transportation’s $5.2 Million project to repave seven miles of NY Route 24/Flanders Road between County Road 63/Lake Avenue and Old Riverhead Road West in the Town of Southampton, Suffolk County is set to resume on Thursday, May 14.
To accomplish construction while minimizing the impact on residents, businesses and motorists, travel lane shifts on shorter sections of NY Route 24/Flanders Road will be utilized. These lane shifts are expected to be in effect for about two months. Last fall the section of NY Route 24 between Birch Avenue and Old Riverhead Road was repaved prior to the onset of harsh winter weather.
The daytime travel lane shifts will be in effect Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. each day, weather permitting. In addition, there may be occasional single lane closures during the same hours. Local officials, businesses, and emergency service providers have been notified about the repaving project. Construction operations are expected to move south to north but may switch locations to accommodate changing construction conditions.
The top layer of the worn, distressed pavement will be removed then replaced with new asphalt and fresh pavement markings including bike lane striping and more visible pedestrian crosswalks. When completed, these pavement repairs will improve motorists’ safety and help maintain the integrity of NY Route 24/Flanders Road in the Town of Southampton. The project is being undertaken by Rosemar of East Moriches, New York and is expected to be completed this summer.
Motorists will be warned in advance of the lane shifts via portable electronic road signs. Drivers who cannot use alternate routes are reminded to drive carefully through the work zone for their safety as well as the safety of the highway work crew. As with most road and bridge projects, this construction work may be cancelled, postponed, or prolonged due to inclement weather.
