Seventy-nine Riverhead High School students were inducted into the National Foreign Language Honor Society on April 26.

The evening began with a prelude by Lauren “Snag” Schaefer and Avenue “Via” Smith on violin, Ben Eager on viola and Aidan “Ignis Lux” Saltni on cello.

“The awards season at Riverhead High School begins in earnest with the National Foreign Language Honor Society induction ceremony to welcome new inductees into the Honor Society,” said Riverhead High School principal Charles Regan. “The National Foreign Language Honor Society is more than just an honor roll.”

The World Language Department seeks to promote a supportive environment which enables the students to attain sufficient learning in a language other English in order to prepare for a productive role in the global community. The purpose of the National Foreign Language Honor Society is to recognize those students who have excelled in the study of their chosen world language.

To be considered for induction, the students must

– be enrolled in at least a third-year language course,
– have at least a 90 percent cumulative average in a world language course,
– have at least a cumulative grade point average of 85 percent,
– have the approval and recommendation of her/his language teacher based on consistent
  high academic performance.

The officers in each of the language societies led the induction ceremonies.

French teacher Mrs. Kristine Cresser introduced the new French inductees. This year’s French officers included: Kyle Gevinski as Président, Susam Ramos as Vice-Président, Bella Morocho as Sécretaire, Cesar Flores as Sécretaire and Anderson Velasquez as Trésoir.

“Doc” Greenberger introduced the new Latin officers Brielle “Spider” Borges Puppetmaster, Evelyn “Ginski” Kennedy-Jafee, The Power Behind the Throne, Ian “C. Romelius Insanus” Moloney, Dictator in Perpetuum Aidan “Ignis Lux” Saltini, and Quem Noscis Amasque Shannon “BuboMinervae” Zeltmann, Factotum.

Spanish teacher Ms. Kellyann Parlato introduced the new Spanish officers Marisa Murgolo as Presidente, Mckenzie Palmer as Vicepresidente, Blaise Meilunas as Secretario and Mayra Alvarado as Tesorero.

Graduating seniors formerly inducted into one of the foreign language societies were introduced at the ceremony. These seniors are attending an impressive array of colleges and planning majors from medicine, creative writing, engineering, culinary arts, teaching and more..

The world language faculty is made up of Spanish teachers Ms. Diana Acosta, Ms. Penelope Boerum, Ms. Kimberly Esteve-Garcia, Ms. Kellyann Parlato and Ms. Norma Jenkins, French teachers Ms. Kristine Cresser and Ms. Keri-Ann Westfall and Latin teachers Ms. Lorene Custer and Dr. Jeff Greenberger, who also teaches Ancient Greek.
