(Updated: 4:05 p.m.) A worker was seriously injured in an industrial accident at a Baiting Hollow excavation site this afternoon.
The 40-year-old man, an employee of BGLJ Servicing Corporation at 1884 Sound Avenue, was injured by equipment used for sifting soil. Riverhead Police responded to a 911 call at 12:12 p.m.
Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance emergency medical personnel first requested a Suffolk County Police helicopter to transport the victim to Stony Brook University Hospital, but then decided to take him by ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center. He is in critical condition, police said.
Riverhead police detectives are investigating.
