Same-day shopping and delivery service Instacart coming to Riverhead area

The online grocery shopping and delivery service Instacart is coming to the Riverhead area next week.

Instacart, a retail delivery service operating across the country, will begin offering services in the local area April 19.

The company, founded in 2012, offers same-day delivery — including one-hour and two-hour service — by personal shoppers who pick and deliver items from local stores.

The rollout next week will include BJ’s, Costco, Best Market and CVS. Petco service will begin April 26, according to a company press release.

Instacart customers use their website or mobile app to select a store and add items to a virtual cart. They chose a delivery window — within one hour, within two hours, or up to five days in advance and check out. An Instacart shopper accepts the order on his/her smartphone, uses the Instacart shopper app to guide them through shopping, and then delivers the order to the customer in the designated delivery timeframe.

Convenience comes with a price, of course.

The company charges a delivery fee that’s determined by the size of your order (there’s a $10 minimum) and the time of delivery. There is a delivery fee of $5.99 on orders of $35 or more. The applicable fee is disclosed at checkout. For an annual fee of $149 or $14.99 a month, customers can join Instacart Express for unlimited, free same-day delivery on orders of $35 or more.

The company also charges a 10 percent service fee that customers can opt out of at checkout. The service fee is not a tip for the shopper. Customers can optionally tip their shopper at checkout.

Also, Instacart item prices may not be the same as in-store prices. The company negotiates prices with the retail partners, according to its website. Some prices may be lower, some the same and some higher than what customers would find in-store, according to Instacart.

“Over the past year we’ve seen incredible demand in the Riverhead area,” Instacart general manager Walker Dieckmann said in the press release. “Launching in Riverhead gives us an opportunity to expand service in the New York market.”

The company plans to employ 100 new shoppers to serve an estimated 26,000 households in Riverhead and surrounding communities.

Local Instacart service areas will include: Riverhead, Flanders, Riverside, Northampton, Calverton, Baiting Hollow, Northville, Aquebogue, Jamesport, South Jamesport, Laurel and Mattituck — as well as Eastport, East Quogue, Quogue, Hampton Bays, Remsenburg-Speonk, Westhampton, Westhampton Beach and West Hampton Dunes.

Until June 19, first-time users can also enter the code HEYRIVERHEAD at checkout to get $20 off an order of $35 or more, plus a free first-time delivery.
