Police are searching for a car thief who stole Supervisor Laura Jens-Smith’s personal vehicle from her driveway early yesterday and led officers on a brief chase before abandoning the car in Laurel and escaping.

Jens-Smith contacted Riverhead Police at 4:42 a.m. Sunday morning to report that her car had just been taken from her driveway, according to a police press release.

Officers spotted the vehicle headed eastbound on Peconic Bay Boulevard near Laurel Lane. The driver fled pursuing officers, turned onto Peconic Bay Boulevard onto Delmar Drive and then sped to the end of the dead-end roadway, where the vehicle was found abandoned partially off the road, police said.

A K-9 search for the suspect led to the Main Road area in Mattituck, where the track ended, according to police.

Police are asking anyone with information about this incident to contact the Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500.
