Lewis Street in Riverhead will be named in memory of Riverhead native Dashan J. Briggs, one of seven airmen who died in a helicopter crash in western Iraq on March 15.

Tech. Sgt. Briggs grew up on Lewis Street and his family still resides there.

Riverhead Town officials will unveil the memorial sign on Saturday, May 26 at 10 a.m.

Briggs, 30, was a 2007 graduate of Riverhead High School, where he played varsity football and lacrosse. Briggs enlisted in the Air National Guard in 2010. He was remembered by varsity head coach Leif Shay as “a true leader” and “an incredible young man.”

Briggs and three others aboard the aircraft — Capt. Andreas B. O’Keeffe, 37, of Center Moriches, Capt. Christopher T. Zanetis, 37, of Long Island City and Master Sgt. Christopher J. Raguso, 39, of Commack — were members of the 106th Air National Guard Rescue Wing in Westhampton.

The Riverhead Town Board this afternoon adopted a resolution authorizing the honorary name designation “DASHAN BRIGGS OF THE 106TH RESCUE WING WAY.”
