The Blue Waves are heading to the girls lacrosse semifinals for the first time in program history, after today’s 13-12 win over over Middle Country on a goal by Delu Rizzo with 30 seconds left in the game.

Riverhead led for most of the game, trailing once in the first half 4-3, but coming right back with three goals to take a 6-4 lead into the half.

After trading goals with Middle Country again, Riverhead had a 12-9 lead with about 3:37 left in the game. But Middle Country clawed their way back on some errant passes by Riverhead to tie it up at 12 with about 56 seconds left. Riverhead gained possession of the ball and with 30 seconds left, Rizzo buried a low shot into the net.

Rizzo had four goals and two assists; Christine Thomas had three goals and two assists; Megan Kielbasa had three goals and one assist; Kayla Kielbasa, Emma Conroy and Katie Goodale had one goal apiece.

Riverhead will face undefeated no. 1 seed Northport in the semifinal game on Wednesday, May 23 in Northport. Game time is 4 p.m.
