A Dodge SUV northbound on Kroemer Avenue attempting to cross Route 58 T-boned a westbound Mazda sedan. The crash occurred at about 7 p.m.
The female driver of the Mazda was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Riverhead Fire Department heavy rescue responded to pop the driver’s side door, which inoperable due to damage from the crash.
The traffic signal at the intersection allows traffic on Kroemer Avenue to make a right turn only. When traffic on Kroemer has a green right-turn arrow, westbound traffic on Route 58 has a green light. Suffolk County public works department engineers asked the town to make the intersection right-turn only for Kroemer Avenue. The town board made the change and a new signal was installed in 2011.
The intersection, though posted with signs and pavement markings indicating traffic is right-turn only, has been the scene of multiple crashes like the one tonight, including one that took place there just yesterday evening.
