(Updated 8:04 a.m.) Two people were shot after midnight last night in downtown Riverhead.

The shootings occurred in a parking lot on East Avenue, Riverhead Town Police said.

Patrol officers, who responded just after midnight to complaints about a large party at a house on East Avenue, where they were standing by as a number of teens were leaving the residence, heard several gunshots nearby, according to a police press release. Officers located two males with apparent gunshot wounds in the parking lot, south of the location of the party.

Both victims, described by police as Hispanic males, were treated at the scene by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance and taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center, where they underwent surgery and are in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Witnesses in the area report several black males being involved in the shooting and were observed running from the area, police said.

The victims of the shooting appear to have been targeted and the incident was not believed to be a random act, police said.

The investigation is ongoing at this time and anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact Riverhead Town Police detectives at 631-727-4500 Ext 332. All calls will remain confidential, police said.
