  • Riverhead’s annual Cardboard Boat races set sail on Saturday, Aug. 11 on the Peconic River in downtown Riverhead.

Race day activities include a hula hoop contest, a bounce house and a rubber duck race, the Riverhead Business Improvement District Management Association and the Riverhead Chamber of Commerce said in a press release today.

Competitors should arrive on the Peconic Riverfront at 9 a.m. for registration and inspection.

Activities begin at 11:30 a.m.

Boats can be constructed only with cardboard, duct tape, and glue.

Competition categories are the Youth Regatta, the Riverhead Yacht Club Regatta, the Grand National Regatta, and the Outlaw Race, in which any boat can re-enter for another chance to win. First, second, and third winners in all categories will earn trophies. Special awards will also be presented by the judges.
