There will be overnight lane closures on the L.I. Expressway this week as the State Department of Transportation’s pavement marking repainting project continues, the DOT announced in a press release.
The agency said the following closures are scheduled to take place during the off-peak overnight hours of 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m.:
- Tuesday & Wednesday: eastbound and westbound right lane between exit 32 (Little Neck Parkway) and exit 48 (Round Swamp Road);
- Thursday: eastbound and westbound right lane between exit 48 and exit 60 (Ronkonkoma Avenue);
- Friday: westbound right lane between exit 48 and exit 60.
Exit ramps are also subject to short-term closures while crews work in those areas, the DOT said.
No work will take place on Monday, Sept. 3 (Labor Day) in accordance with the governor’s
suspension of construction projects to ease holiday weekend traffic.
“These closures are a continuation of repainting pavement markings along the Long Island Expressway, which generally occurs on a three-year cycle, ensuring clearly visible lane markings are and to modify existing markings to address safety concerns,” according to the press release.
Completion of work on the LIE is expected in the fall.
Variable message signs will be alerting motorists and carrying additional details with any updates.
Work may be cancelled, postponed, or prolonged due to inclement weather.
“Motorists are reminded to drive carefully through the work zone, obey any speed restrictions that may be in place, and the instructions of the flag persons for their safety and the safety of the highway work crew,” the DOT said.
