Strong winds and gusts over 55 mph today brought down tree limbs around town and at least one large tree.

A tall pine tree on Fanning Boulevard in Riverhead was felled by the wind this afternoon and it took down power lines, snapping three utility poles, one of which had a transformer on it. That caused aa power outage in the neighborhood. PSEG-LI was able to restore power to most of the homes this afternoon. The remaining customers should have power restored by 9:30 p.m., according to the PSEG-LI website.

The utility was reporting 150 outages affecting 2,400 customers system-wide as of 4:45 p.m. There were no other outages in Riverhead Town at that time, though there was one in Riverside, on Vail Avenue affecting fewer than five customers, according to the PSEG-LI website.

The Riverhead Town Highway Department were on Fanning Boulevard cutting up the downed tree, as utility crews worked on the lines. Highway Superintendent George Woodson said he expected the road to be opened up before 6 p.m.

Woodson said the windy weather brought down some large limbs and branches in various locations.

“All in all, we haven’t made out too bad today so far,” Woodson said.

The National Weather Service in Upton has issued a wind advisory through 9 p.m. Wind gusts of up to 50 mph are expected.
