A fundraiser for the Detective Brian ‘Smiles’ Simonsen Memorial Foundation has been set for Sunday, May 19 at the Inn at East Wind in Wading River.

The foundation will award a memorial scholarship to a graduating Riverhead High School baseball player, organizers said. It will make its first scholarship award this year.

Simonsen, 42, was killed in the line of duty Feb. 12 after responding to a report of an armed robbery in the Queens precinct he spent his career protecting. He was a 19-year veteran of the New York City Police Department.

A Jamesport native and a resident of Calverton, Simonsen was a 1995 graduate of Riverhead High School, where he played baseball and football for the Blue Waves.

Tickets to the fundraiser are $75 per person in advance and $85 at the door. Admission includes a buffet dinner, open bar, and DJ. Tables are still available.

Tickets may be purchased from Lindsay Ekizian at 631-664-4381, Mike Lojko at 516-769-4727 or Ricky Waters at 516-659-6639, or email [email protected]

Organizers for the fundraising event are still seeking donations for a raffle that will be held that evening.

To donate a raffle prize, please contact Melissa Peeker at 631-334-5001 or Mike Lojko at 516-769-4727.
