Fifth-graders at the St. John Paul II Regional School in Riverhead treated police officers to a catered lunch on Friday to thank them for their service to the community.
“The fifth-grade class here at St. John Paul, they put together this lunch for our community service project,” fifth-grade teacher Hailey Wehr said. “They’re super excited to have all the local police officers and family members come down to join us just as a thank you for everything they do.”
Students at the school also played cornhole and football with the officers, who were from both the Riverhead Police Department and Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department.
Wehr said the class was “adamant” about hosting police officers for their event to show their support.
“I hope that they learn to appreciate everything that police officers do for us, to understand their role that they’re here to support us and to protect us,” Wehr said.
“The Riverhead Police Department gratefully accepted the invitation,” said Riverhead Police Lt. Ed Frost. “I’m glad we’re here to show the kids the police department and some of our vehicles.”
