Yesterday’s snowfall left roads and sidewalks covered with up to 4 inches of snow in some areas of Riverhead, Riverhead Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski said this morning.

Town highway crews have been out plowing again today since 4:30 a.m., Zaleski said.

Riverhead Central School District is operating on a two-hour delay this morning.

While snow began falling Sunday morning and continued throughout the day, it did not begin to accumulate on roads and sidewalks until late in the afternoon and evening, when temperatures, which had hovered just below freezing during the day, began to drop. Overnight lows fell to about 18° in Riverhead.

“Roads are good overall,” Zaleski said this morning. Areas that don’t typically get a lot of sun during the day are snowy and icy, he said. Temperatures remain in the teens early this morning.

Crews are out plowing and sanding, but people should use extra caution when heading out to work and school this morning, Zaleski said.
