Supervisor Yvette Aguiar will give this year’s “State of the Town” address at a dinner meeting of the Riverhead Rotary, Lions and Kiwanis clubs to be held on Wednesday, June 8.

The dinner meeting will take place from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Sea Star Ballroom on East Main Street. Dinner tickets are $35 per person. There will be a cash bar.

People who are not members of the clubs are welcome to attend as guests, but purchase of a dinner ticket is required for admission to the event.

Registration and payment can be made on the Rotary Club’s website. Questions can be directed to Rotary Club Secretary Kim Judd by email or (631) 727-3017.

This is the first time in the last four years that the address has been held outside of Town Hall.

Former Supervisor Laura Jens-Smith, when she took office in 2018, broke with a longstanding tradition of giving the address at the “tri-club” meeting and instead decided to give her “State of the Town” speeches in Town Hall, open to all and free to attend. Each time, her “State of the Town” addresses drew standing room-only crowds. See prior stories in 2018 and 2019.

Aguiar did not give a “State of the Town” address in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic. Last year, Aguiar gave the speech at Town Hall to an invitation-only audience, with attendance limited due to COVID restrictions.

“Because of COVID, when I took office, we didn’t have it. This is a long, longstanding tradition and the clubs requested it — and so we’re going to continue with that tradition,” Aguiar said in an interview today.

The speech will be taped and aired on Optimum Channel 22 and available on the town’s website within a couple of hours after it has ended, Aguiar said.
