Barnes & Noble, the largest chain of retail book stores in the United States, is opening a new store in an empty 10,862-square-foot building in a Route 58 shopping center.

The storefront of the former Pier 1 Imports store in Riverhead Centre on Old Country Road has large banners in its windows announcing the book store’s fall 2022 opening.

The storefront has been vacant since Pier 1 closed more than half of its stores, including its Riverhead location, in 2020. The site is located opposite the building occupied by footwear retailer DSW, once the home of Borders Books and Music, before the company filed for bankruptcy and closed all its stores in 2011.

Barnes & Noble could not immediately be reached for comment. The company has created social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram but has not yet posted anything.
