The League of Women Voters of the Hamptons, Shelter Island and North Fork will hold candidate debates in the First Assembly District and First Senate District races on Monday evening, Oct. 17 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The debates will be held via Zoom and can be viewed live on the SeaTV Southampton YouTube channel. Recordings of the debates can be viewed on demand beginning Oct. 18 at the same link.

The first debate, from 7 to 7:45 p.m. will feature incumbent Assemblyman Fred Thiele Jr. and challenger Peter Ganley. It will be moderated by the league’s Estelle Gellman.

The second debate, from 7:45 to 8:30 p.m. will feature incumbent State Senator Anthony Palumbo and challenger Skyler Johnson. It will be moderated by the league’s Cathy Peacock.

The candidates in each debate will make timed opening and closing statements and answer questions contributed in advance by email to the league’s voter services committee chair Barbara McClancy.

Early voting in the general election takes place from Oct. 29 to Nov. 6. The early voting location in the Town of Riverhead is the Riverhead Senior Center, 60 Shade Tree Lane in Aquebogue.

Election Day this year is Tuesday, Nov. 8.

The deadline to register to vote in the general election is Friday, Oct. 14. Voter registration forms may be downloaded online here. Registration forms can be mailed to the Suffolk County Board of Elections, P.O. Box 700, Yaphank NY 11980. They must be postmarked by Oct. 14. Registration forms can also be submitted in person at the Suffolk County Board of Elections, Yaphank Avenue, Yaphank NY 11980. Voter registration forms can also be submitted in person at the Department of Motor Vehicles, if you already have DMV-issued identification, on the DMV website.

Absentee ballot applications in English and other languages can be downloaded from the NYS Board of Elections website and mailed to the Suffolk County Board of Elections, PO Box 700, Yaphank Ave., NY 11980, by Oct. 24.

Registered voters can also apply for an absentee ballot online at the State Board of Elections website.
