A man was rushed to the hospital last night with a gunshot wound to his head after a shooting incident on East Main Street in the vicinity of Riverhead Town Hall.

Multiple police units descended on the area after the report of shots fired in front of 747 East Main Street at about 6:14 p.m. Friday.

Patrol units rendered aid to the victim at the scene, police said. He was transported by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance to an area hospital, police said.

Riverhead Police and sheriff’s department K9 units were deployed to search for possibly two perpetrators, who fled the scene in an unknown direction, police said.

Police later identified the victim as James Ayers, 47, of Flanders. He remains in critical condition, police said in press release issued early this morning.

The Riverhead Town Police Department along with the New York State Police Forensic Identification Unit investigated the scene into the early morning hours.

Police ask anyone with any information about this case to call the Riverhead Town Police Department at 631-727-4500. All calls will be kept confidential, police said.
