A strong low pressure system moving across the region is bringing occasionally heavy rains and strong winds to the local area early this morning.

A coastal flood warning is in effect until 1 p.m. today.

Widespread minor to moderate flooding of vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline are expected, with 1 to 2 feet of inundation above ground level in low-lying, vulnerable areas, according to the National Weather Service.

Moderate flooding along the Peconic Riverfront in downtown Riverhead is expected with this morning’s high tide cycle at around 10 a.m., according to the weather service.

Breaking waves of 3 to 5 feet along open east and northeast facing shorelines on the East End, particularly Orient Point, will result in beach erosion, with wave splash over over dunes and bulkheads exacerbating flooding of shoreline roads and properties, the weather service said. Localized minor damage to shoreline structures is possible.

East winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph prompted a wind advisory early this morning. The advisory expires at 6 a.m. Winds will shift to the west as the low pressure system passes over or just south of the island, according to the National Weather Service.

Rain should taper off after 10 a.m. today. Then expect mostly cloudy skies with temperatures holding at about 40 degrees throughout the day, the NWS forecast says.
