When can a public body meet behind closed doors? Can officials discuss public business by emails and text messages? Does the public have the right to access copies of all government documents?
Interested members of the community can learn the answer to these and many other questions at two upcoming virtual information sessions being offered by the New York State Committee on Open Government.
The sessions will be conducted by the assistant director of the Committee on Open Government on Thursday, May 18 and will provide an overview of the Open Meetings Law and the Freedom of Information Law. Assistant Director Kristin O’Neill will also answer questions for half an hour.
Participants will learn the rules for the conduct of public meetings in New York State and the rules that apply to public records access — and what to do if the rules are being broken.

Freedom of Information Law session: May 18, 10 -11:30 a.m. Register.
Open Meetings Law session: May 18, 12-3:30 p.m. Register.
All registrations, up to 500 participants, will be automatically approved. All registrants will receive a confirmation email from WebEx with instructions for joining the session. Please check spam folder if the email does not arrive.
