An air quality health advisory is in effect in the Long Island region today from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. for ground-level ozone.
The air quality forecast today says the air is unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children, older adults and those who have respiratory diseases, such as asthma. People in those groups, as well as people who exercise outdoors and people involved in vigorous outdoor work should consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity when ozone levels are highest — generally in the afternoon to early evening, according to the State Department of Health.
Summer heat can lead to the formation of ground-level ozone, a major component of photochemical smog.
The forecasted Air Quality Index (AQI) for today is 108 on Long Island. The state issues air quality health advisories when State Department of Environmental Conservation meteorologists predict levels of pollution, either ozone or fine particulate matter, are expected to exceed an AQI value of 100.
