Riverhead Town is holding a ceremonial street renaming contest for a section of West Second Street, where the new Town Hall is set to open.

This contest was announced at the Aug. 15 Town Board meeting, where the board encouraged all members of the community to submit their ideas. The portion of the street that will be renamed is between Roanoke Avenue and Griffing Avenue.

Council Member Bob Kern and Supervisor Yvette Aguiar advised that vulgar entries will not be accepted. “We’ll sift through them,” Kern said. Aguiar added that “curse words– it’s not going in, that kind of stuff.”

Entries can be submitted to: townhallcontest1@gmail.com

Submissions are open until Oct. 2. The winner of the contest will be announced at the Oct. 17 Town Board meeting.

“I think it’ll be fun,” Kern said. “It gives the community a chance to weigh in.”
