A strengthening frontal system approaching from the west will produce potentially heavy rains and strong winds this afternoon and tonight, according to the National Weather Service, which has issued a high wind warning and flood watch for the region.

Winds of 25 to 35 mph, gusting to 55-60 mph are expected, the weather service said.

Across portions of Long Island and southern Connecticut, 3 to 5 inches of rainfall is likely, with locally higher amounts possible, and possibly a thunderstorm, according to the weather service forecast. Widespread minor urban and riverine flooding is expected, with a localized flash flood threat, according to the flood watch statement from the weather service.

Damaging winds may blow down trees and power lines, the weather service said in the high wind warning statement. “Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles,” the warning states.

PSEG-Long Island said it is prepared for the storm. “PSEG Long Island has been monitoring the track of the storm and we are prepared for its potential impacts,” PSEG-LI Vice President of Electric Operations Michael Sullivan said in a statement issued by the utility company Friday. “We have performed system and logistic checks, and have a full complement of personnel who can mobilize for storm mode if needed. Our crews will work to safely restore any outages as quickly as conditions will allow.”

PSEG-LI reminds residents that downed wires should always be considered “live.” People should stay as far away as possible from downed wires, and should not drive over or stand near them.

To report a downed wire, call PSEG Long Island’s 24-hour Electric Service number at 800-490-0075 or call 911.

The high wind warning is in effect from 4 p.m. today through 11 a.m. Monday.
