Riverhead Town Police are urging motorists to use extra caution when traveling late this afternoon and tonight, due to the possibility of black ice on road surfaces as temperatures fall to around 20ºF. 

“If traveling, reduce your speed and allow extra time,”  police said in a travel and weather advisory this afternoon.

All evening activities in the Riverhead Central School District have been canceled tonight, Interim Superintendent Cheryl Pedisich announced this afternoon. Riverhead schools will have a two hour delayed opening tomorrow morning and all before-school activities are canceled, she said in a message around 4:30 p.m..

The winter weather advisory was extended until 7 p.m. for western Suffolk and Nassau, the National Weather Service said. Also, a small craft advisory is in effect for Peconic Bay and Long Island Sound from 6 p.m. today  until 6 a.m. tomorrow.

Update, 5 p.m.: This article has been updated to include information about a two-hour delay for Riverhead schools, which was announced after initial publication.
