A Riverhead man was arrested last night after allegedly stealing a vehicle from a gas station parking lot and driving drunk, according to Riverhead Police.

Riverhead Police were notified of a vehicle stolen from the parking lot of the Speedway Gas Station on Old Country Road at around 10:30 p.m. last night, police said in a press release. The owner of the vehicle said he left the car running unattended in the parking lot while he was inside shopping, police said. Multiple police officers responded to the area and located the vehicle within minutes at the 7-Eleven Store on 1050 Old Country Road, and detectives began to investigate the incident, police said.

Albert Joseph Stepnoski, 50, was arrested as a result of the investigation and charged with one count of fourth degree criminal possession of stolen property, one count of aggravated driving while intoxicated and one count of driving while intoxicated. He was transported to Riverhead Police Headquarters and held for morning arraignment, police said.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. A person charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
